Course overview

This course is built by campaigners, for new campaigners. ReportOUT’s LGBTQI+ Advocacy and Campaign Leadership Programme combines rigorous theoretical grounding with hands-on, practical campaigning to equip activists with the skills, strategies, tactics, and leadership needed to win real social and political change. We do not separate thinking from action. We teach how they work together.

Participants are introduced to key frameworks from human rights and development, political advocacy, and social movement theory, providing a strong analytical foundation for understanding power, populism and politics, inequality, and change. These theories are immediately applied through practical exercises in campaign design, messaging, coalition-building, traditional and creative tactics, media engagement, and leadership decision-making, ensuring learning is relevant, usable, and rooted in real-world campaigning.

Campaign leadership sits at the heart of the programme. Participants learn how to design and lead campaigns from concept to impact: developing theories of change, setting strategic goals, mobilising supporters, managing risk and backlash, analysing power and geopolitics, and sustaining movements over time. Alongside this, the course emphasises ethical and collective leadership, care, security, and accountability within movements operating in challenging environments.

This is an applied course with depth. Participants will work on live or simulated campaign projects, receive feedback from experienced advocates, and leave with both the intellectual tools to analyse injustice and the practical skills to confront it.

If you are ready to challenge systems, organise power, and lead change, we know how to campaign, and we can teach you.

Your commitment

This is a six-month programme designed for participants who are ready to fully engage. The course includes two live day-long sessions per month, alongside structured independent learning. Participants are expected to continuously develop their campaign throughout the programme, submitting work for review, responding to feedback, and refining their approach as the course progresses.

Alongside live sessions, participants must complete homework exercises, engage with required readings, Problem Based Learning exercises, and actively participate in discussion threads on Moodle, where peer learning and collective reflection are central to the experience. Moodle is our online learning platform where participants access course materials, readings, exercises, and recorded sessions. It’s also where discussion threads take place, allowing you to reflect, share ideas, and learn collaboratively with peers throughout the programme. Learning is both individual and collaborative.

Active participation is essential. Participants are also required to join a dedicated WhatsApp group to support communication, mutual accountability, and community building throughout the course. This programme is designed for those committed to showing up, doing the work, and building campaigns that can deliver real change.

In short, you must:

  • Commit to at attending all sessions.

  • Complete pre and post session tasks and activities which are available on Moodle.

  • Complete readings.

  • Engage with feedback on your campaign as it develops over the course.

  • Present your campaign back to your peers at the end of the course.

  • Engage with our Alumni group after the course ends.
